When Should You Book Newborn Photography?
When to Book Newborn Photography Cardiff
If you’re expecting and wondering when to book newborn photography Cardiff parents trust, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I’m asked by expectant parents across Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and South Wales.
When to book newborn photography in Cardiff
The best time to book is usually between 20 and 32 weeks of pregnancy (second trimester into early third). Newborn sessions are time-sensitive and most photographers limit the number of sessions they take each month so they can allow for babies arriving early or late.
By booking in advance, you’re securing your place in the diary without the stress of trying to organise everything in those first few days after birth.

When should the newborn session take place?
For the classic sleepy, curled-up newborn look, most sessions take place when babies are between 5 and 14 days old. This is often when babies are:
- sleepier and more settled
- more comfortable being gently posed
- less likely to be disturbed by small movements
This doesn’t mean sessions are impossible after two weeks — just that babies can be more alert, stretching out more, and feeding more frequently. The style of your session can be adjusted to suit your baby’s age.
How booking works around your due date
When you book, your session isn’t fixed to one exact date months in advance. Instead, it’s reserved around your due date. Once your baby arrives, you simply message me within the first few days and we’ll confirm the best session day and time.
This flexible approach is especially helpful for parents in Cardiff and surrounding areas, as it keeps things calm and realistic — no pressure, no rushing.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
This is completely normal. Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, and newborn photography is planned with that in mind.
If your baby arrives early, your session will be brought forward where possible. If your baby arrives late, we’ll adjust accordingly. This is why booking ahead matters — it gives you a protected space in the diary so we can work around real life rather than trying to squeeze you in last minute.

Why waiting until baby is born can be risky
Many parents begin thinking about photos once they’re home and settled. The issue is that newborn photography has a small window for those traditional images, and availability can be limited — especially during busy months.
If you want the best chance of getting your preferred timing, it’s better to book during pregnancy rather than waiting until after delivery.
The two-week stage and newborn changes
Babies change quickly in the first couple of weeks. Many experience a noticeable growth spurt around two weeks, which can increase feeding frequency and reduce long sleepy stretches.

That’s one reason why the 5–14 day window is recommended if you’re hoping for a very sleepy newborn-style session.
Is it too late if my baby is older than 14 days?
Not at all. If your baby is older than two weeks, we can still create a beautiful session — it may just be more natural and baby-led. Older newborn sessions often include:
- more open-eye images
- gentle wrapped setups rather than deep sleepy poses
- more parent, sibling and family connection
Every baby is different, and every session is tailored to your baby’s comfort and pace.
