Commercial Photographer Cardiff – Priory Kitchens Photoshoot for Vale Life Magazine

There is always something special about seeing your photography in print, but knowing that one of the photographs from a recent commercial photoshoot is going to appear on the cover of a magazine makes the project even more exciting.

I was recently commissioned to carry out a commercial photography shoot for Vale Life Magazine, photographing Priory Kitchens for an upcoming feature.

One of the images from the photoshoot has also been selected for the front cover of the magazine.

Priory Kitchens is a South Wales kitchen design company creating kitchens designed around the individual needs, style and requirements of its customers.

For this Vale Life Magazine photoshoot, the aim was to create professional imagery that would accompany the magazine feature while showcasing the business, its people and the quality of the kitchens and designs.

Commercial photography is about much more than simply taking a photograph of a product or business.

The images need to communicate something. They need to give potential customers a sense of the company, the people behind it and the experience they can expect when working with them.

That was particularly important for this shoot because the photographs were being created for editorial use in Vale Life Magazine.

Creating Photography for Vale Life Magazine

Magazine photography brings its own set of considerations.

Unlike photographing solely for a website or social media, editorial photography needs to work alongside headlines, copy and page layouts.

That means thinking carefully about composition while shooting.

I always try to provide a mixture of horizontal and vertical photographs, wider environmental images, closer details and portraits where appropriate.

Giving a magazine designer this variety provides much more flexibility when creating the finished feature.

For this particular commercial photography shoot, that became even more important when one of the photographs was chosen to become the cover image.

A Photograph Selected for the Magazine Cover

Having one of my photographs selected for the cover of Vale Life Magazine is something I am incredibly pleased about.

A magazine cover photograph has to do a lot of work.

It needs to immediately catch someone’s attention while still leaving enough space within the composition for the magazine masthead, headlines and other cover elements.

This is why I always consider the intended use of commercial photographs while I am shooting.

If a client tells me that photographs could potentially be used for advertising, brochures, magazine covers or website banners, I can deliberately create compositions with suitable negative space for text and graphic design.

It is a small consideration during the photoshoot that can make the finished photographs significantly more useful to the client.
