Baby Boy Cake Smash Ideas – A Real First Birthday Session
Planning a first birthday photoshoot for a little boy can be so much fun, especially when you start putting together the backdrop, cake, outfit and all the little details that make the session feel personal.
This recent baby boy cake smash at my Dinas Powys studio is a lovely example of how a first birthday session can combine simple portraits, plenty of cake and a bubble bath afterwards to create a really varied gallery.
The session was booked as my Smash & Splash experience, which includes a bespoke cake, use of my cake smash outfits and props, professionally edited photographs and tub time to finish.
If you are currently planning your own baby’s first birthday, you can view all of my cake smash photography packages and recent sessions here.

One of the first decisions when planning a cake smash is choosing the overall look of the session.
There are so many directions you can go with a baby boy cake smash. You might love something colourful and playful, prefer soft neutral colours, or choose a theme based around something your little one already loves.
The important thing is that everything works together. The backdrop, cake, outfit and props should complement each other rather than competing for attention.
I discuss styling with parents before every session so that the studio can be prepared before you arrive.
If you are still deciding what you would like, my guide to cake smash photoshoot ideas for first birthdays has lots more inspiration to help you plan.
Starting With First Birthday Portraits
Although everyone calls it a cake smash, the cake does not necessarily need to appear immediately.
I love starting sessions with some simple first birthday portraits while everything is still clean.
This gives us the opportunity to capture your baby’s personality without the cake and buttercream taking centre stage, and it also gives little ones a chance to become comfortable in the studio.
At one year old, babies are wonderfully unpredictable. Some arrive ready to smile at everyone, while others need a little time to work out who I am and what is happening.
There is never any pressure to perform for the camera. We work at your baby’s pace and use play, noises, favourite songs and plenty of encouragement from parents to bring out natural expressions.
Bringing Out the Birthday Cake
Once your little one has settled in, it is time to introduce the cake.
With my Smash & Splash package, the bespoke cake is included and styled to complement the chosen setup.
Then we let your baby take the lead.
Some babies immediately grab huge handfuls of buttercream. Others start much more cautiously with a single finger before gradually becoming more adventurous.
There is no correct way to do a cake smash.
In fact, one of the reasons I love photographing them is because you genuinely never know what is going to happen.
If you are worried that your little one might completely ignore their birthday cake, have a read of my guide about what happens if your baby doesn’t smash the cake. It happens far more often than parents expect, and we have plenty of little tricks to encourage them.
Capturing Their Personality at One
First birthdays are such an interesting age to photograph because so much personality is beginning to appear.
Those little expressions are often what parents end up loving most from their gallery.
It might be a huge smile after discovering the buttercream tastes good, a suspicious look at the cake, a determined attempt to pick up the whole thing or the expression they make when their hands suddenly become completely covered in icing.
Those moments cannot really be planned, and that is what makes them special.
Rather than trying to create dozens of perfectly posed photographs, I concentrate on capturing the genuine reactions and little details that tell the story of the session.
What Should You Bring to a Cake Smash?
You really do not need to arrive at the studio carrying half the contents of your house.
For a Smash & Splash session, I recommend bringing a towel, a clean outfit for afterwards, your baby’s usual drink and a few favourite snacks.
A familiar snack can be surprisingly useful if we need to encourage your little one towards the cake.
You can also bring your own outfit or cake topper if there is something specific you would like incorporated into the photographs.
I’ve put together a full cake smash packing guide for parents if you want to know exactly what is worth bringing before your session.
From Cake Smash to Bubble Bath
Once we have created enough chaos with the cake, it is time to swap buttercream for bubbles.
The Smash & Splash experience includes a tub time photoshoot after the cake smash, and it is often one of the most entertaining parts of the whole session.
For babies who love bath time, the reaction can be instant.
We get splashing, bubbles flying everywhere, huge smiles and another completely different set of photographs for the final gallery.
It is also a very practical way of getting most of the cake and buttercream off your baby before you have to put them back in the car!
Why First Birthday Cake Smash Photos Are So Special
Your baby’s first year passes incredibly quickly.
By their first birthday, they have changed from that tiny newborn you brought home into a little person with their own expressions, preferences and personality.
A cake smash gives you an opportunity to document exactly who they are at that point.
It does not matter whether they completely destroy the cake or spend most of the session looking suspiciously at it.
The photographs are about them.
And years from now, the messy hands, funny expressions and tiny details are exactly the things you will want to remember.
