Cake Smash Photoshoot Cardiff: The Perfect 1st Birthday Celebration
Your baby’s first birthday is such a milestone – full of laughter, mess, and memories you’ll treasure forever. If you’re looking for a fun, colourful, and completely unique way to celebrate, a cake smash photoshoot at my studio near Cardiff is the perfect choice.
What is a cake smash photoshoot?
A cake smash session is exactly what it sounds like: a joyful celebration where your little one gets to explore, squish, and taste their very own birthday cake while I capture every giggle and expression on camera.
At Shutter Hire, my studio in Dinas Powys (just minutes from Cardiff) is fully equipped with themed backdrops, outfits, and props to match your chosen colours or birthday theme. Each session is tailored to you – whether you prefer something soft and pastel or bold and bright.
Cake smash photography in Cardiff, Penarth and the Vale of Glamorgan
I regularly welcome families from Cardiff, Penarth, Barry and across the Vale of Glamorgan for cake smash photoshoots. Many parents make a morning of it – stopping for coffee in Penarth or enjoying a stroll along the seafront afterwards.
Because my studio is based locally in Dinas Powys, it’s easy to reach from anywhere in South Wales, with free parking right outside.
What’s included in a cake smash session?
- A beautifully styled cake smash setup
- Outfit options, accessories and props
- Time for clean portraits before the smash
- A bubble bath set afterwards (optional, but very popular)
- Professional editing and a private online gallery to view your images
Many families also choose to add family or sibling photos before the smash – a lovely way to capture everyone together on this special milestone.
Why cake smash photography is so popular
Cake smash sessions have become one of the most loved ways to celebrate a first birthday – and for good reason. They’re a perfect mix of fun, creativity and keepsake photography. The images tell the story of your baby’s unique personality, capturing their expressions, curiosity and excitement at every stage.
Many parents use the photos for birthday invitations, wall art or thank-you cards, making the shoot part of the full celebration experience. It’s also a brilliant way to mark your baby’s growth since their newborn session – watching them go from tiny newborn to confident cake-smasher is such a lovely milestone to document.
Tips for the perfect cake smash
- Bring a spare outfit (or two) – things can get wonderfully messy.
- Schedule around nap time to keep your baby happy and relaxed.
- Choose a theme that suits your baby’s personality – soft florals, jungle fun, bright balloons, or anything in between.
- Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t love cake straight away – I capture every moment naturally, whether they’re curious, cautious or fully committed.
