What is the Best Age for Newborn Photos (Cardiff Guide)

If you’re wondering about the best age for newborn photos, you’re not alone…

This is one of the most common questions I get from parents – when is the best age for newborn photos?

If you’re planning a newborn photography session in Cardiff or the Vale of Glamorgan, timing can make a big difference to the style of images we’re able to create — but it’s also not something to stress about.

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand the best time to book your newborn session, and what to expect at each stage.

What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?

The ideal age for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old.

During this stage, babies tend to be sleepier and naturally curl into those soft, womb-like positions. This is when we can achieve those classic, peaceful newborn images that most parents love.

It’s also the stage where babies are less likely to be disturbed when gently repositioned, which helps create a smoother, more relaxed session.

What If My Baby Is Older Than 2 Weeks?

This is something parents worry about a lot — and the honest answer is: it’s completely fine.

I regularly photograph babies who are 3, 4, or even 6 weeks old, and we still capture beautiful images. The style may just be slightly different.

Older babies are often more alert, which can actually lead to lovely eye contact and more expressive photos.

Instead of very curled poses, sessions may include more natural, relaxed positions — which many parents end up loving just as much.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

The best time to book your newborn photography session is during your pregnancy.

I pencil in your due date and then confirm the exact session date once your baby arrives. This gives you flexibility while making sure you don’t miss out on availability.

Newborn sessions are limited each month to allow enough time for each family, so booking early is always recommended.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This happens all the time — and it’s absolutely expected.

Because I work around due dates rather than fixed appointments, I keep space available to adjust once your baby arrives.

Whether your baby is early or late, we’ll find a suitable session date that works for both of us.

Does Timing Affect the Style of Photos?

Yes — but not in a negative way, just in a different way.

For younger newborns (under 2 weeks), sessions tend to focus on:

  • Sleepy, curled poses
  • Wrapped setups
  • Soft, peaceful expressions

For slightly older babies, sessions often include:

  • More natural, relaxed poses
  • Awake moments and eye contact
  • A bit more movement and personality

Both styles are beautiful — it simply depends on your baby and what stage they’re at.

Is It Ever “Too Late” for Newborn Photos?

Not at all.

While the classic newborn window is the first couple of weeks, there’s no strict cut-off point. Every stage of your baby’s early life is worth capturing.

If you’ve missed that early window, I would always recommend still going ahead with a session rather than missing it altogether.

Where Are Your Newborn Sessions Based?

All newborn photography sessions take place in my dedicated studio in Dinas Powys, just outside Cardiff.

It’s easily accessible from Cardiff, Penarth, Barry, and across the Vale of Glamorgan, and fully set up for a calm, comfortable newborn experience.

If you’re currently expecting, the best thing you can do is get your session provisionally booked in advance.

This gives you the flexibility to photograph your baby at the ideal age, while making sure everything is organised ahead of time.
