When Should You Book Newborn Photography?

The ideal time for newborn photography is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. At this stage, babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those soft, relaxed poses.

That said, don’t worry if your baby is a little older — I regularly photograph babies beyond this window and still capture beautiful, natural images.

I always recommend booking your newborn session during pregnancy to make sure I can reserve space around your due date.

What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?

When you arrive at my studio in Dinas Powys, everything is set up ready. The space is warm, quiet, and designed to keep your baby comfortable throughout.

I’ll start with wrapped poses, which help settle your baby and create those cosy, peaceful images. From there, we move into a variety of setups using carefully chosen props, textures, and neutral tones.

If you’d like them, I also include parent and sibling photos — these are often the images families treasure the most over time.

There’s no rush at any point. We stop for feeds, cuddles, and settling whenever needed. The entire session is led by your baby.

How Long Does a Newborn Photoshoot Take?

Newborn sessions typically last between 2 and 4 hours. That might sound long, but it allows plenty of time for feeding, changing, and settling without any pressure.

I always work at your baby’s pace — some sessions move quickly, others take a little longer, and that’s completely normal.

What Should You Bring to Your Session?

To keep things smooth and relaxed, I recommend bringing:

• Extra milk or feeding supplies
• Nappies and wipes
• A dummy (even if you don’t normally use one — they can really help settle baby during posing)
• A spare outfit for baby

I provide all the wraps, props, and backdrops, so you don’t need to worry about bringing anything else.

Is Newborn Photography Safe for My Baby?

This is something every parent naturally thinks about, and rightly so.

Your baby’s safety and comfort always come first. My studio is kept warm for newborns, all props and fabrics are cleaned regularly, and every pose is done gently and safely.

I never force a pose — if your baby isn’t comfortable, we simply move on to something else.
